Alice in Wonderland

The Nutcracker

Once again, Americas Ballet presented a SOLD OUT Nutcracker at The University of South Florida’s Theater on Sunday, December 13, 2015.  Every year our performances delights hundreds of spectators with our students in a unique display of artistry and professionalism.

Tampa City Ballet (TCB), under the artistic direction of Paula Nuñez, is a not for profit (501c3) organization that explores and creates unique works of art using the mediums of ballet and modern dance. This mission is accomplished through education and collaboration with local organizations working together with TCB to inspire and engage audiences in the Arts.

The Nutcracker is a two-act ballet, originally choreographed by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov with a score by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. The libretto is adapted from E.T.A. Hoffmann’s story The Nutcracker and the Mouse King. It was given its première at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg on Sunday, December 18, 1892, on a double-bill with Tchaikovsky’s opera, Iolanta.

Although the original production was not a success, the twenty-minute suite that Tchaikovsky extracted from the ballet was. However, the complete Nutcracker has enjoyed enormous popularity since the late 1960s and is now performed by countless ballet companies, primarily during the Christmas season, especially in the U.S.

Don Quixote

Based on Cervantes’ epic novel, Don Quixote is a must-see for the whole family. Follow the hero and his comedic companion Sancho Panza as they travel through Spain in search of adventure, righteousness and love. Enjoy as the Orchestra plays one of classical ballet’s best-loved scores, while the dancing will simply leave you breathless.

Sleeping Beauty

In a magical Fairy Kingdom, a Princess named Aurora was born to a wonderful King and Queen. The Kingdom’s Fairy of Protection, Lilac Fairy, and all of her maidens were invited to celebrate Princess Aurora’s birth, but in the midst of the excitement the royal family forgot to invite the wicked fairy, Carabosse.

Although Carabosse is distraught by their neglect, she and her crew come to party anyway with evil intentions in mind. She disguises herself as a beautiful fairy and pretends to enjoy the festivities. Despite her outward appearances of happiness and joy, the evil within her boils to the brim and she can no longer contain it.

She angrily casts a spell over Princess Aurora declaring that on Aurora will prick her finger and die on her 16th birthday. Quick to defense, the Lilac Fairy casts another spell over Aurora saying that rather than dying, Aurora will fall asleep after pricking her finger. After Carabosse leaves, the party is restored and everyone continues to celebrate

Dans Le Jardin

At ABS, performances are an integral part of the school’s philosophy. Students of all levels and divisions are invited to perform. Each December, dancers can be a part of The Nutcracker produced by Tampa City Ballet. The spring performance, which is mandatory for all students, is held in the middle of June, and is either a classical ballet or a children’s story choreographed by the faculty of ABS specifically for the students.

ABS dancers are also involved in other events and competitions throughout the year., including the Central Florida Dance Celebration and Youth America Grand Prix.
